'There are many, many valuable lessons to be learnt from history, but those lessons cannot be learnt if the history is written but remains unread by all but a few. History is not something that should be confined to large impressive tomes or left to academic scholars. It is worth being summarised in smaller volumes, and written in a way that holds the interest of the general reader. That has been my aim and challenge.

This book is not meant to be a complete, exhaustive history of the Lutheran church in Australia, one that meets all academic criteria. To do so would be impossible in a book of limited size which was my commission from Openbook Publishers. I set out to research and then write a popular account of Australian Lutheran history that would summarise the larger detailed picture accurately, presenting it in an interesting, lively way for the average Lutheran of today (and other interested readers) who might shy away from a technical, multi-volume presentation of all the objective facts.'
